FAFSA Information Night

Join us for our Parent U event designed to assist students and families with the FAFSA application process on Wednesday, November 19, from 6:00–8:00 PM at Deering High School. Financial experts from FAME, Financial Assistance of Maine, along with our school guidance counselors and Make It Happen site coordinators will be on site to help navigate the FAFSA process. Interpretation services will be provided.

On September 16 Parent U held a session all about the Portland Public Schools’ new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum. Joanna Frankel, Director of Elementary Culture and Climate, led the discussion on how the new SEL curriculum is integral to the Strategic Plan, and the strategy our staff uses to ensure that all students feel safe, supported and prepared to manage relationships and emotions effectively.

Making Inclusion Real: Ease and Complexity

Parent University held an engaging panel discussion on how equity can make classrooms more inclusive and supportive for all students. Parents and teachers are key partners in fostering students’ social, emotional, and educational growth. To meet the unique needs of each student, it’s essential to focus on equitable support tailored to individual circumstances.

Multilingual Back to School Fair

The Back to School Fair for multilingual families provided families with crucial information about after-school programming, co-curricular activities, graduation requirements, school learning technology platforms and more! Families heard from staff at Boys & Girls Club, Portland Community Squash, and Greater Portland Health about the programming and resources they provide to families in the district; learned about the Make It Happen program and athletic offerings at Portland’s middle and high schools and filled out required digital forms with the help of multilingual staff!

Embracing Neurodiversity: Understanding and Supporting Our Children

Join us at Presumpscot Elementary School on September 
24th from 5:30-7:30pm for an informative workshop led by Dr. Audrey Bartholomew. This session will give an overview of ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, and other cognitive differences, and will explore the strengths and potential challenges faced by neurodiverse students. Interpretation, refreshments, and childcare will be provided.

Attention Hijacked: Mindful Approaches to Tech Use

With the widespread use of technology and social media, it can be daunting to set boundaries for phone and computer usage at home. This session gave families the support that they need to help their children create more positive habits around screen time, and to help them understand the destructive impacts that screen overuse can have on their mental health and academic achievement. Presented by Erica Marcus, this session empowered families to open up a conversation around home tech-use, and provided tips for educating children and teens on the importance of setting screen time boundaries.

Reimagining Family Engagement - Understanding Maine's School Funding System

Parent University held a session: Reimagining Family Engagement - Understanding Maine's School Funding System. In this session, former Portland mayor and State Representative Mike Brennan outlined the factors involved in determining the yearly state and local budgets for public education, and helped participants comprehend the complexities of school finance reform.

Reimagining Family Engagement - Navigating the State Legislature

Community members came together to discuss how families can take a more active role in shaping policies that impact public schools students in the state of Maine. Led by Dania Bowie of the Maine Women’s Lobby, this session armed participants with the knowledge and strategies necessary to engage in legislative advocacy on behalf of Portland Public Schools students.

4th Grade Health Curriculum Overview

Parents and guardians of 4th graders were invited to attend the 4th Grade Health Curriculum Overview on January 18.

This session offered an overview of the three-lesson curriculum which outlines the physical, social, and emotional changes that come in puberty, why teaching this material is important, and what we can do together to partner to ensure a successful experience for children.
