Portland Public Schools Parent University will celebrate the end of its first year with family fun devoted to wellness. Learn how Portland Public schools is addressing social and emotional health. Cycle through a variety of healthy activities, including cooking healthy snacks, mindfulness exercises, Aikido, yoga, and dance. Prizes will be awarded to participants in the Parent University sessions offered this year. The event will be held from 1:00-3:00 at Lyman Moore School on Saturday, June 2, 2018.

Activities:

"My Playful Puppy Mind"
Mindfulness for Families

This session will give families an introduction to their puppy minds through Andrew Jordan Nance's book "Puppy Mind." Together, we will read the story, practice taking deep breaths, and support our puppy minds in being kind and attentive. From there, we will explore other activities that help our minds be focused, curious, and kind!

Yoga for Families:
This session will give families the opportunity to explore their bodies and minds through games and movement. We will take a playful approach to yoga as we challenge our balance, strength, and flexibility individually and through partner poses. We will also give special attention to the breath as a way of supporting these movements.

Bollywood Dance:
Dance can be one part of a healthy and joyful lifestyle! Come and learn some moves from famous Bollywood movies with Priya Natarajan, a math teacher at Casco Bay High School!

Aikido- Martial Art of Peace and Way of Harmony

Using focused movement, families will learn a healthy way to resolve negative feelings with this Japanese Martial art!

Ron Houle is a 4th degree black belt in Aikido, which he has studied for 34 years. He is a retired social worker who specialized in mental health and substance abuse.
